Pilates for Beginners

If you're considering a classical Pilates class for beginners, here's what you need to know

Give yourself permission to be a beginner!

Pilates may seem intimidating, and it is a common misconception that Pilates training is only for serious athletes or professional dancers. It is true that classical Pilates is a challenge for even the fittest of the fit. But it is also true that Pilates meets you at your current fitness level, and goes on to provide a lifetime of new fitness challenges, learning, and body/mind integration.

Where to Start.

First, find the right Pilates studio for you (for Venice Pilatesor Marina del Rey Pilates visit us at Turning Point Pilates). Second, in order to get the most benefit and to avoid injuries, meet with an experienced Pilates instructor. Together, you will assess your needs, and put together a plan that works toward specific goals. Third? Pilates!

What to expect.

Don’t expect to “get it” the first time through. Pilates is a different kind of training method, one that compliments other practices and sports. Do expect to engage your core like never before. A Pilates routine typically includes strength training exercises that are focused and controlled. You may opt to take a Mat class, or a Reformer class (or both!). Over time, the low-impact movements increase flexibility, posture, muscle strength, balance, and endurance by emphasizing the use of abdominals, lower back, hips, and thighs.

Looks can be deceiving.

Yes, Pilates training might get you flat abs, toned thighs, a better booty. However, looks don't tell the whole story of how a body feels, how it moves, or if it’s injured. Toned thighs don’t reveal how movement is causing back pain. Flat abs might mask the fact that you can’t enjoy life’s simplest activities. Pilates training connects the mind to the body, working from the inside out, and offering benefits far beyond a better booty.

Change your mind. Change your body.

Classical Pilates isn’t easy. You bring 100 percent to each session. You must check your ego at the door. But you will be rewarded with a brand new body, and a healthier outlook on life. It’s worth it. YOU’RE worth it!
